Job listings hint at next Windows Phone update

Microsoft looks for engineer, first official mention of Windows Blue

Blue has been a colour associated with the Windows Platform and its upcoming updates for a little while now and last week saw the first official mention of Windows Blue in a Microsoft job listing, spotted by a source at ZDnet. According to the ad the company is looking for a software development engineer to join the team that works on the OS's UI. This indicates that we're going to see some more noticeable changes than just under the hood performance tweaks.

Unfortunately the job listing has since been pulled but it was up for enough time to reveal that we can expect to see changes to the start screen, application lifecycle, windowing and personalisation.

Aside from that fact not a lot was revealed about what the update holds but no doubt more information will leak soon enough. Another recent job listing hinted that Microsoft is also on the hunt for someone who can help bring Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 closer together. Although they share the same design language in terms of their apps they're quite separate. However it's looking probable that future updates will make it easier to develop one app which works on both platforms.

While Blue is the name applied to the update which will reach all the latest versions of Windows another job listing has specifically mentioned Windows Phone Blue. In particular it wants someone to work on an Excel app for the next version of Windows Phone.

According to the advert it wants an Excel mobile app that allows "users to have a consistent experience with spreadsheets across Web, Slate and Phone end while leveraging the power of the cloud".

It's not clear yet whether Microsoft is going to use the Blue name when it's officially released. However it's likely whatever it's going be called that it will be delivered as a refresh of the OS rather than a full blown new version.
