Bouygues Telecom swallows Darty to gain 300,000 subs

Published: 11 May, 2012

French triple play IPTV operator Bouygues Telecom has acquired the Darty Telecom group gaining 300,000 more IPTV subscribers along with 40,000 mobile. This is not just an asset and customer stripping exercise according to Bouygues, since the DartyBox set top box will now be offered to the whole combined broadband customer base, which now numbers 1.5 million.

However the existing Dartybox customers will be offered the option of migrating to Bouygues Telecom's Bbox, which provides a wider range of content at present until the service integration is complete. This includes content from state owned France Télévisions' five channels, available to Bbox users for seven days after initial broadcast. It also offers a cloud based gaming service from Playcast Media Systems, allowing Bouygues Telecom triple play subscribers to play console-quality video games on their TVs through their set top box without any additional hardware.

The Bbox runs software components from NDS, including a graphical engine for the user experience with HD and 3D capability, and an application manager to enable development and management of new apps based on HTML5 or Flash. Content security is provided by Verimatrix with its Video Content Authority System (VCAS) for IPTV.
