A DVR with no wires?

By PETER WHITE

READ MORE:

We have mentioned video over WiFi a number of times, but no-one until Amino this week, has talked about a DVR product which ONLY has a WiFi connection to remote set tops, and has no fixed line connection such as MoCA, HPNA or G.hn.

Amino has simply added the Celeno OptimizAIR chips, the CL1830 and the CLR 250 to its IPTV product line, but makes the point that operators can turn their devices into DVRs using this technology. The chips are packaged only as a WiFi video bridge and a dongle for connecting existing devices and Amino will eventually build similar chips into its set tops. It will be interesting to see if it finds an operator client ready to rely entirely on WiFi for sending content between a set top and its storage.

Rival chip maker Quantenna, through its CEO Sam Heidari, told us that Quantenna "never had and never would" lose a test against the Celeno chip, but Quantenna was certainly evaluated for this Amino deal, and Celeno preferred. It's not a boast he should keep making.
