Panasonic announced today the launch of Viera Connect Developers, a public web portal for IPTV application developers for writing applications for its Viera Connect cloud-based TV service. The idea is to improve time to market for developers who write applications that have a cloud based element, instead of residing purely on the TV and the portal site is hosted by Accedo Partner Programs on behalf of Panasonic.

The new SES Astra 1NS satellite which was supposed to go up on July 1 has had its launch postponed until the end of July, due to a technical anomaly on the launch date. The satellite was due to launch from the Guiana Space Centre in French Guiana on an Ariane 5 ECA and carry a Eurostar E3000 platform with 52 Ku-band transponders, and was to eventually serve the German, French and Spanish markets.

The UK’s Braodcasting Audience Research Board (BARB) will roll out a Web TV viewing meter in just 100 of its panel homes during the second half of 2011. BARB is the UK’s counterpart to Nielsen in the United States, a not-for-profit company owned by the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, BSkyB and the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising. Initial Web monitoring will be to assess the process and the impact of metering PC and tablet consumption in 100 of those participating panel homes. It will then extend to over 1,000 panel homes once the bugs are ironed out of it in 2012, reaching 2,500 people. Nielsen also plans to offer its own Video Census product to measure online TV content in both the UK and the United States.

Ofcom has launched an interactive map of the UK’s fixed broadband, using data provided by ISPs and will use it to submit a report on the UK’s communications infrastructure to the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport every three years. The map covers the availability of superfast broadband, the average broadband take-up, the average maximum speed and the percentage of homes below 2Mbps.

Do you get Spam? Have you noticed it going down lately? You haven’t? Well Symantec says that it has fallen by around 82% from one year ago, after the closure of Spamit and Rustock, two major spam players over the course of the past 12 months (see graph) Spam has fallen from 225 billion spam emails a day to around 40 billion.

Microsoft has signed a patent deal with white label device maker Wistron, primarily to provide coverage of Microsoft patents which it claims are used in Android. Microsoft now makes more money in patent licenses in Google’s Android, which is open source and which it doesn’t own, than it does from its own WP7. It has previously sued Motorola in an, as yet unresolved, suit and convinced HTC to pay $5 per handset to Microsoft for what seem to be largely imaginary patents which are supposed to be used in Android. Now it is going after Samsung, claiming Android patent breaches, but each time Microsoft sues someone it lists different patents, many of which are not IN Android. What might happen to Microsoft’s patents if it was found to be going solely after Android makers, but with patents which relate purely to phones, not to Android itself. Would that be a basis for its patents to be revoked? Someone needs to look into this.
