SeaChange International has more to lose than most if suddenly cable operators begin to implement brand new systems that take in both OTT (TV Everywhere) and traditional services – it has something of a stranglehold in US cable VoD systems. So naturally it had to be one of the first major equipment players to move into cloud based video services from those self -same servers and it has just announced its new multi-screen product.
There were very few technical details revealed at The Cable Show. Earlier this week Motorola made a bold move with its Televation product, which will open up set tops to deliver their pay TV load to WiFi connected portable products like tablets and smart phones.
But SeaChange can’t achieve any advantages going straight from set top to a portable device, and instead must take the other route whereby tablets are fed video from a cable company’s existing video servers, over existing broadband to the same home using WiFi.
SeaChange calls it SeaChange Express and is pitching it as a fast to market service offering video operators a low-risk multi-device video offering adding PC, tablet or mobile screens, including Apple and Android, to existing TV services in just a few weeks, the company said.
“Express provides MSOs with a true TV Everywhere experience and an alternative to an in-house deployment, offering a fast, low cost entry with a high quality of service. Uniquely, SeaChange offers Express, pre-integrated with existing SeaChange installations and an anytime in-house migration option to support next generation TV offerings”
The system is based on the existing SeaChange Adrenalin back office software which it says will combine linear, VoD and Time Shifted TV. It comes pre-integrated with existing SeaChange products and an operator can put their own brand on the service. The portable UI is based on SeaChange’s existing Nitro Multi-Screen UI software and it can use most existing DRM options and most streaming systems including Apple HLS, Adobe RTMP(e)/HTTP Dynamic Streaming, Microsoft Smooth Streaming and RTSP.
“Express provides MSOs with a true TV Everywhere experience and an alternative to an in-house deployment, offering a fast, low cost entry with a high quality of service. Uniquely, SeaChange offers Express, pre-integrated with existing SeaChange installations and an anytime in-house migration option to support next generation TV offerings,” said Damian Mulcock, vice president, worldwide multi-screen business, SeaChange International.
SeaChange this week is also tempting cable operators with a new advertising option, built with software provider This Technology. It’s an advertising insertion system for multiscreen which will provider operators with a single web-based interface to manage advertising campaigns across VoD, Internet and mobile platforms.
The company says that previously you needed two systems to support both TV and multiscreen advertising and that this new system includes all the SCTE advertising specs, operating with the IAB Digital Video Ad Serving Template.
The system is based on the existing SeaChange Infusion advertising platform with the This Technology’s SpotLink software added and it supports dynamic pre-, mid- and post-roll ad insertion into VoD.
