Aruba says that it has shown 100 iPads in a classroom showing the same video streaming simultaneously from six different educational apps. It says it managed this without jitter, delay or frame loss and 100% of the iPads passed the multimedia SLA, as measured by VeriWave WaveInsite, which also confirmed a sustained performance of 1Mbps of multimedia streaming to each iPad. This was all done at the University of Ottawa and it has resulted in a reference design for deploying latency-sensitive mobile apps, says Aruba. But didn’t Apple just put that capability into iOS 5 where other iPads can get the same stream as you?

Zoran, which is mid-way through being acquired by Cambridge Silicon Radio will use the NCTA to show a new chip platform optimized for HD interactive IP set-tops, the SupraXD 288 SoC. This chip is built in a 40nm process, and has onboard a CPU, 3D graphics and low-cost memory. It will support existing conditional access, DRMs, and DTCP-IP and can talk to WiFi and MoCA components. Zoran says that thin IP client set top volumes will grow to 21 million units in the US by 2014.

Elemental Technologies said this week Avail-TVN will deploy Elemental Live and Elemental Server video processing systems at its Super Head End in Burbank, California, along with the Elemental Conductor management system. Avail-TVN will uses these to deliver around a 100 channels of content.

US researcher In-Stat said that advertising supported content discovery will reach $2.4 Billion by 2015. This is really about multiscreen and smart TV users looking for content, and during that process absorbing adverts. It takes a bit of imagination to see that what used to be “zapping” now becomes an intelligent process that secures eyeballs for ads. “When consumers are navigating for content, advertising is not seen as an interruption. In fact, it might help consumers find what they’re looking for,” says Gerry Kaufhold, Research Director at In-Stat. The same report says that the installed base of “smart” devices will grow at a CAGR of 46% to 2015.

Quantenna has announced that Datasat Technologies has selected its Full-11n 4x4 MIMO QHS710 chipset for use in its Datasat IN100 wireless LAN solution to deliver multiple video streams through several walls over long distances at low packet error rates, either as a mesh-networking solution for frequency offloading in hybrid 3G/4G/Wi-Fi hotspots or as a video bridge for wireless home networks.

Chumby Industries, a software company which provides personalized experiences on multiple devices has teamed up with set top builder Pace, to put its apps on Pace set-top boxes. Chumby operates cloud-based content delivery which is flexible across different screen size and device types, and it offers 1,500 applications, ranging from music and social networking sites, news and entertainment gossip, photo viewing, video clips and sports scores.
