Pace partners Rovi on cloud search

By PETER WHITE

Pace needs to make up its mind. Either it Elements Software stack already has plenty of cloud search, recommendation power and UI mastery to conquer pay TV markets, as it said at IBC, or it needs the help of Rovi and its Total Guide services.

Rovi announced this week that the two had come together to jointly develop cloud services for operators in the US and Latin America. The chances are that Pace itself is not confused, but that kind of statement might confuse its customers.

It's Elements software is probably perfectly good and could be used, but Rovi has probably landed a software win at one of the Pace clients and it is duty bound to bundle in the Rovi offerings into its existing set top lines - effectively taking the place of its own software.

The two are calling it an integrated hybrid Internet Protocol solution and it will feature a new Rovi TotalGuide search and discovery platform which can be reached using standard web technologies like HTML 5.

This does not mean that the two are joined at the hip and that all Pace boxes will suddenly come bundled with Rovi software instead. We'll look out for the project over the coming 12 months as one US major or other launches a service built around Rovi cloud search.
