Assia in landgrab for global DSL

Published: 8 December, 2011

Slowly but surely Assia is taking over the DSL world and already controls some 45 million DSL lines, up from 28.5 million lines a year ago, including all 16 million of AT&T's lines. And if any organization has the confidence of the DSL community that it can put up a decent fight against DOCSIS 3.0 cable based broadband lines, it's Assia.

As it begins to move its DSL management system out of the US it has customer wins at SFR and Bouygues in France, Orange in Poland, and such notables as SingTel and Telefonica.

We have barely mentioned the company before, except to say that its CEO, John Cioffi, once pioneered the original DSL market at a company called Amati, which was sold to form the core of the Texas Instruments DSL business, and that he has more recently pioneered DSL management techniques to remove crosstalk from telco lines, making possible the next generation of 100 Mbps DSL lines.

Talking to Jerome Joanny of Assia, senior director product management this week it's not set to end there. Worldwide there are 368 million DSL lines compared to just 109 million DOCSIS cable broadband lines and 50 million fiber lines. Assia is after the management of all of them.
