Is TV social enough to create a new Facebook?

It was only a matter of time before someone tried to do something directly in social TV, that is build a social network built around viewing TV, and now someone, a start up with people we know quite well, has gone and done just that, at ConnecTV.

And the company has come out of stealth mode, straight into the limelight, with a strategic deal with local US broadcasters who reach 76 million US homes. We're pretty sure that ConnecTV can offer its core software to any broadcasters around the world, but given that most national broadcasters in Europe already have their own web-based catch up services, they will for the most part, leave social TV alone and simply integrate catch up with Facebook, Twitter and Google +.

For us the critical social TV offering is catch up and VoD movies, so that you can have a nostalgia party (watch an entire TV series in a day) or a movie party, where people in different locations watch together, comment in a single stream, and even have voice capabilities built in and the entire event is captured for posterity.

In the end Facebook becomes an irresistible way to launch a movie, instead of going through theatrical release and we can't wait until someone tries to offer 500 million people globally a chance to watch a movie for the first time through Facebook. Someone will.

But for now ConnecTV is partnering to give US broadcasters a second chance at revenues - both inside and outside of the broadcast window, so that Americans have the tools to chat on their tablets in clusters when watching TV. It's a long shot, because people have their own social networking preferences already full of their contacts. There may be one chance left for someone and if anyone can do it, a player with the power of advertising and promotion from the TV companies gives this player every chance.
