Pay TV revenue continues to boom globally, according to IDATE's 21st edition of its World TV Markets report. It said the pay TV sector is still dominated by cable TV companies, but satcos and the telcos' IPTV service are gaining.

Florence Le Borgne, director of IDATE's TV and digital content business unit, said, "Subscription revenue had a growth rate of 0.5% in 2009. In 2010, the worldwide pay TV market had 690.2 million subscribing households, an increase of 7.6% on the year." Cable, with more than 490 million households accounted for most of the subscriptions.

Cable TV went down from a 79.5% market share in 2007 to 71.5% in 2010. During the same period, satellite TV increased from 17.8% to 22.3% to 154.1 million subscribers. IPTV delivered by telcos for the most part have added 24 million households in that time and its share increased 3 points to 5.1%.

Subscription terrestrial TV increased from 3.6 million households in 2007 to 4.5 million in 2010, both being about 0.6% market share. Le Borgne said the increase in paid terrestrial TV is due to the expansion of DTT in the United Kingdom, France, Italy and Scandinavia.
