Envivio tries to hijack OTT video

Gérard Depardieu is alive and well and has joined our industry. He goes by the name of Julien Signès, the CEO of encoder designer Envivio, but we are sure he is one and the same person. Signès has the gallic shrug, the same sense of boldness, like he is invincible, and the same sense of mischievous fun. Both of them make a living out of the movies.

At IBC this year Signès tells us things that he knows his technology partners would rather he kept secret, then he laughs and says we are to be trusted and won't repeat them. He invites us into his world of secrets and the dark arts of digital video, with a wink and his head turned slightly to one side, like he wants to see what we will make of it. Like I said, he is Gerard Depardieu, I'm sure of it.

Another similarity is the way Signès knows that the rules, they are made for other people, which is how he runs his business. He is one of the pioneers of the creation of MPEG from the days he spent at France Telecom, following the lead of Leonardo Chiariglione, from CSELT, who is attributed with being the father of MPEG back in 1980s, but who tapped into many fine young minds to achieve it, and they are all now strewn about our industry.
