A few weeks ago the Galaxy Z smartphone was spotted on a Swedish website and now an international variant known as the Galaxy R has appeared on the web. Showing up in an official looking photo and a video demo the handset appears to be the same as the Galaxy Z and will provide a more affordable alternative to Samsung's flagship Galaxy SII handset. Like the Galaxy SII it's set to offer a large screen and some decent hardware but will be downgraded in key areas to make it more affordable.

The phone is expected to feature a 4.2" Super LCD display, 1GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core processor and 8GB of internal storage. Other key features include a rear facing 5mp camera that can capture 720p HD video and a front facing camera for video calling. If 8GB isn't enough storage space it can be expanded with a microSD card up to 32GB.

While it is not known when this device will be released SammyHub claims that an official announcement isn't far off and that the phone is going to be made available in Europe first followed by South West Asia, The Middle East and China. It's not clear how much it will cost yet but the Swedish website where it first appeared list the device with a price of 3995SEK ($634) which was considerably cheaper than the Galaxy SII which would set Swedish consumers back 6295SEK ($998).

Although Europe has the handset to look forward to Samsung has already said that it would not release the Galaxy Z in the UK, perhaps because it already has a decent affordable Galaxy handset in the form of the Ace. Whenever and wherever it is available it's a sure fire hit given the popularity of the Galaxy SII this year.
