KPN IPTV numbers surge in Q3, installing up to 5,000 a week

Dutch telco KPN installed over 50,000 IPTV customers in the past quarter, as its year to date figures shows that it has finally cracked how to open up

Dutch telco KPN installed over 50,000 IPTV customers in the past quarter, as its year to date figures shows that it has finally cracked how to open up the Netherlands market for IPTV. It now has 245,000 IPTV customer homes, a small dent in the total 6.3 million pay TV homes there and 7.2 million TV homes.

The figure though has risen dramatically from the 193,000 last quarter, and has more than trebled from the 76,000 IPTV customers that KPN had only a year ago.

It now has more than 1 million TV customers, since it also has a DVB-T service called Digitenne, which it has been running for over 5 years. This has far less spectacular growth and reaches 899,000 this quarter, up just 4,000 against 895,000 last quarter and up 43,000 from the 856,000 it had a year ago.

Digitenne costs just €10 a month, and offers 42 TV channels, with an extra €12.50 for Dutch soccer and extra monthly charges for a DVR. The IPTV service costs much the same, but is mostly now sold in a bundle with broadband at €35 a month.

The results for KPN showed that IPTV sign-ups are now running at between 3,000 and 5,000 each week during the third quarter. KPN has a static number of broadband lines at 2.6 million, around 42% of the Dutch market.

KPN Group revenues were up 1.4% year on year to €3.4 billion with a net profit of €406 million and free cashflow of €681 million.
